6 Tips on Writing a Good Book

Are you an aspiring author looking to write your first book? Or maybe you’ve already written a few books and are looking to improve your writing skills. Either way, there are some key things you can do to write a good book that will captivate your audience.

  1. Keep It Simple

If your book is intended for the general reader, the best books are usually the ones that are easy to read and understand. People read books as a form of escapism and a captive but easy to follow book allows your reader to easily escape to another reality without too much effort – just what is needed after a hard day’s work!

When you’re starting out with your concept, don’t try to make things too complicated. Start by brainstorming ideas for your book. What is it about? What genre does it fit into? Once you have a general idea, start doing research and fleshing out your story. Make sure your story is compelling and has a strong plot.

  1. Start With an Outline

Once you have your concept and have done your research, it is time for the outline.  A great way to start writing a book is to create an outline of what you want to cover. It will act as your guide as you progress with your writing, so you don’t lose yourself or the plot of your book. You can use your outline to stay on track and keep your thoughts organised. This can be updated as you write but as with the first rule, keep it simple and don’t over complicate your book.

  1. Write Every Day

It’s important to make writing a habit if you want to finish your book within a reasonable time period. Set aside some time each day to write, even if it’s just a few hundred words, so it becomes effortless to do and part of your daily routine. Pay attention to your book’s structure as you write. Each chapter should have a specific purpose and advance the story in some way. You should also ensure that your writing is clear and concise. Use an active voice and avoid using too many adjectives.

  1. Edit as You Go

Don’t wait until you’ve finished writing to start editing. As you write, keep an eye out for any mistakes such as plot holes and/or passages which need improvement. Once you have a first draft, it’s important to go through and edit it ruthlessly. Remove anything that doesn’t further the story or add to the character development.

  1. Get Feedback

Before you publish your book, it’s a good idea to get feedback from beta readers or editors. They will spot things you may have missed while writing and revising your book. Constructive criticism is invaluable for any writer so that you are able to tweak and fine tune your book, ensuring your final version of your book is the best that it can be.

  1. Promote Your Book

Once your book is published, don’t forget to promote it! There are many ways to do this, such as through social media, blogging, advertising, or you could hire a PR firm who are experts in the field.  A successful promotion campaign can make or break an author, after all, what is a book if nobody reads it?

If you follow these tips, you will be well on your way to writing a book and becoming an author. With a little hard work and some elbow grease, you can write a book that people will love and that you will cherish.
